Time To Learn 2009-01-14 2009-01-14
Hello.
Welcome to the Happy House. It’s about twenty to seven in the morning as I start writing. At half eight Dad’s coming to give me a lift to the doctor’s, an appointment that was made way before Everything Happened but which I’ll tell him about.
Yesterday at work was difficult for myself and my fellow condemned. Where we had felt quite numb it seemed we’d both become angry. Anything we did work wise we resented - why make an effort for people who are probably going to get rid of you. My analogy was that it was like being dumped unexpectedly by someone who then expects you to carry on normally, as though everything was all right. Plus we’re fighting the instinct that if we make an extra effort it may make a difference even though we know it ultimately won’t and then we’d have worked harder than usual for nothing. The irony of my having to work on the shop floor for an hour wasn’t lost on anyone. I’ll be having a word with Boss about that when I get to work this morning.
The other irony for me is that this is my busiest time of year and the returns lists are piling up, all expected to be cleared by the end of the financial month. Even at the best of times I don’t think we can achieve that. Should out of hours working be suggested my polite answer will be that I’m not prepared to do that and my impolite one will be that they can shove the fuckers up their collective arses.
Mabel doesn’t improve. In fact if anything she’s weaker. She can’t support herself properly, so I’ve had to prop her up with more of the towels I mentioned last time. She remains pain free and hungry but without my help she can’t function properly. Last night I was up with her until half one in the morning making sure she had something to eat. She went to sleep for most of the time. In the end I was so tired I had to put her to bed so I could go to bed.
I think I know what must be done. I’ll talk to Drew on the phone today and tell the Boss I’ll need some time off and arrange a lift from someone so I can get to the vets. I have no idea what the procedure for this is. Time to learn, I suppose.
Right, better go and finish getting ready for work.
